Bandon, Ore. - The San Jose State men's golf team battled the wind and a one-hour frost delay, but finished the first round of the Bandon Dunes Championship with a seven-over par 295 total and are in fifth place among 18 competing teams.
"We started on the back side, the tougher side of this course," said head coach John Kennaday. "The wind came up, and in a different direction than what we experienced in practice, so it was like playing an entirely new course."
Daniel Semmler opened his round on the 6,859-yard, par-72 course Old Macdonald Course with birdies on two of his first three holes and made the turn at one-under. He was still one-under coming to his 18th hole, but a bogey left him at even par (72) for the day and in a tie for eighth place.
Cody Blick started his round with a bogey on his first hole but bounced back with a pair of birdies to make the turn at one-under. After a pair of bogeys on the inward half and he is in a tie for 15th place at 73 (+1).
Justin Estrada is also shot a 73, carding four birdies and five bogeys. He went out in one-under, but like Blick came home two-over and is in a tie for 15th place.
Connor Covington made the turn at two-over. A birdie on is 12th hole got him to minus-one, but then he had a double bogey sandwiched between a pair of bogeys and finished in a 55th place tie with a 77 (+5).
Landon Polterock struggled out of the gate, was seven-over through 11 holes before he carded his first birdie. He finished plus-10 and in a tie for 88th place.
"With the adverse conditions, I thought we made good adjustments," said Kennaday. "We just weren't rewarded as well as we could have been."
SMU's Harry Higgs and Fresno State's Triox Tronkham paced the field with two-under par 70s. They lead a group of five players by one stroke. Oregon carded a two-over 290 on Friday and is a shot ahead of Colorado and UMKC.
Round two of the 54-hole tournament continues on Saturday with players going off both the 1st and 11th tees. Fans can follow the action through www.golfstat.com.
