Myers Leads Way At Fresno Lexus Golf Classic

Fresno, Calif.-----Sophomore Jay Myers continued his effective scoring for San Jose State University with an even par round to open first-day play the annual Fresno State Lexus Men's Golf Classic.

Myers was tied for 10th place in the 100-player field with his first round 71 on the par 71, 6,802-yard San Joaquin Country Club course. His round included six birdies, three of which came in his final five holes.

With the field scheduled to play 36 holes on March 8, Myers was able to finish all but his final hole of the second round due to darkness at an even par pace. Again, he found himself with ground to make up to level par with bogeys on his first four holes. However, he found his touch again with birdies on four of the next six holes to regain even par.

Should Myers par his final hole of round two when play resumes on March 9, he will have three straight scores of even par over his last two tournaments.

When play was suspended, Myers was tied for 11th five strokes behind Pepperdine's Andrew Putnam, who was five-under par for the 33 holes he was able to play.

In the team competition, San Jose State completed round one in 16th place in a field of 16 teams. Unlike other tournaments this season, each team is playing six players with the best five scores counting. The Spartans had to count a 79 from Christopher Lang and one of the 81's from Stephan Stallworth and Matthew Hovan. Mark Hubbard fired a 75 and Rosco Valentine opened with a 77 for San Jose State's team score of 383.

Pepperdine was the first round team leader with an even par 355. Brigham Young was second at 361. #6-Washington at 363, #21- California at 365 and #24-University of San Diego and UC Irvine tied at 366 round out the top six teams.

Second round play will resume at 8:00 a.m. (PST) on March 9. The final round of the 54-hole tournament begins after the second round is completed.
