Gibbs Finishes Under Par At John Burns

Schofield Barracks, Hawaii-----Peter Gibbs was the only San Jose State player to break par in the final round of the John Burns Intercollegiate with a two-under par 70.

Gibbs, a freshman from Granite Bay, Calif., was the Spartans’ top finisher in the spring season-opening tournament with a two-under par 214 on the par 72, 6,917-yard Leilehua Golf Course. He closed out the tournament with back-to-back 70's.

In the team scoring, San Jose State finished 18th out of 20 American college teams at 872. Auburn set a tournament record with a 44-under team total of 820. Texas A&M at 831, UNLV at 832, San Diego State at 835 and SMU at 841 rounded out the top five teams.

California’s Stephen Hale fashioned identical scores of 67 in each round for a 201 total and medalist honors. Fifty-eight of the 110 players in the field matched level par or finished under par.

Gibbs tied for 44th place. Rosco Valentine, who started the tournament with a 69, tied for 70th at 219. Mark Hubbard, whose second-round 68, was a major college best tied for 78th place at 220. Stephan Stallworth bounced back and posted an even par 72 in the final round for a 222 total and a tie for 85th. Drew Nottenkamper finished 107th at 236.

The Spartans return to competition, March 10-11, at the Callaway Golf Collegiate Invitational hosted by the University of San Diego in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
