Myers Ties For 10th; Spartans 15th At John Burns

Leilehua, Hawaii-----San Jose State freshman Jay Myers turned in his second consecutive even par 72 to finish in a 10th place tie highlighting the Spartans’ play at the 33rd annual John Burns Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament.

With his fourth top-10 finish in a row, Myers finished with a 54-hole total of 210 on the par 72, 6,917-yard Leilehua Golf Course. University of New Mexico’s James Erkenbeck posted the low score of the final round, a seven-under par 65, for a 205 total and top individual honors. Erkenbeck edged out Tarquin Macmanus of Arizona, who led after the first and second rounds and finished second at 206 following a 72. SMU’s James Kwon was third at 207.

In the team competition that featured 14 teams in GolfStat’s top-100, San Jose State, ranked 92nd, was 15th at 882. The Spartans had their best team score of 292 in the final round. Rosco Valentine, with a 73, and Aaron Conrad, with a 74, had their best round in the final 18 holes.

“We played a lot better today, but we couldn’t recoup from the first two rounds,” said San Jose State coach John Kennaday, who won the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational in St. george, Utah earlier in the month. “I’m confident we will bounce back.”

Texas A&M took home team honors with an 836 total powered by the low team score of the final round and in the tournament (272). New Mexico was second at 839. Arizona, the leader after 36 holes, dropped to third at 840.

San Jose State returns to action, March 9-10, at the Fresno Lexus Classic.

“The competition will heat up for (spots in the lineup) for our next tournament,” added Kennaday.
