Valentine Ties Season Best At John Burns Intercollegiate

Schofield Barracks, Hawaii-----Rosco Valentine shot a three-under par 69 to lead San Jose State University in the opening round of the John Burns Intercollegiate.

Valentine’s second three-under par round of the season helped San Jose State to an even par team score of 288 and a tie for 13th place heading into the second-round of the Spartans’ season-opening 54-hole spring tournament.

Stephan Stallworth added a par 72 on the Leilehua Golf Course. Freshmen Mark Hubbard with a 73 and Peter Gibbs at two-over 74 also had their scores in the team format that counts the four best scores.

"This was our first round of the spring and we had to find out where we are. We played better than we scored," said San Jose State coach John Kennaday. "Drew (Nottenkamper) had a tough day today, but I was pleased with the way the others went about their business."

Auburn, Arizona and San Diego State are tied for the team lead at 10-under par. UNLV and SMU are tied for fourth at nine-under par.

Jay Mosley of Auburn, Tarquin Macmanus of Arizona and Johan Carlsson of San Diego State share the individual lead at 66. Valentine is in a nine-way tie for ninth place with his 69.
