Myers 4th After 36 Holes At John Burns Intercollegiate

Wahiawa, Hawaii-----Jay Myers of San Jose State University remained in contention for the individual championship of the John Burns Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament with an even par 72 in the second of three rounds at the Leilehua Golf Course.

Myers has a 138 total and is tied for fourth place in the 96-player field. In his last 13 rounds of competition, the freshman from San Jose’s Branham High has matched or bettered par 11 times. His opening round 66 on February 18 is one of four sub-70 scores during this five-month stretch.

“Jay had a very rough start. He realized what he was doing and came home with a round that was reasonably good,” said San Jose State coach John Kennaday about Myers’ even par performance.

Arizona’s Tarquin Macmanus maintained a two-stroke lead with a two-under 70 and a 134 score. BYU’s Jordan Hammer, tied with Myers at the start of the round, shot a 70 and is in second place at 136. Fourteen golfers including Myers are within five strokes of the lead.

In the team competition, only four of the 17 teams had better second round totals on a day that had more winds and a slight amount of tropical rain. In the opening round, 13 five-man squads were under par. Arizona, at 556, extended its lead to six strokes over second-place New Mexico. Posting the best team score of the middle round, Texas A&M, with its 278 total, is alone in third place at 564.

San Jose State is 15th at 590. Three Spartans, Peter Gibbs, Aaron Conrad and Rosco Valentine had better scores than in the first round, but Myers’ 72 was the only Spartan score to match or better par.

“We’ve played better,” added the Spartans’ coach. “Coming off of our victory (last week in St. George, Utah), we had a lot of expectations and worked hard before the tournament. The battle isn’t against the golf course. It’s against ourselves. It’s not easy to win and win again.”

The 54-hole tournament concludes on February 20 with 18 holes of competition.
