Men's Golf Tied For Lead At Thunderbird Invite

St. George, Utah----Freshman Jay Myers and senior Aaron Conrad were two of the 11 players who matched or bettered par leading San Jose State University into a first-place tie in the opening round of the fifth annual Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational men’s golf tournament.

Myers posted a one-under par 71 and Conrad added an even par on the 6,758-yard Sunbrook Golf Course. Myers notched five birdies and one of the day’s six eagles during his 18 holes. Conrad had four birdies in his first competitive round of par or better golf since October 30, 2006. With Rosco Valentine and Mark Hubbard each shooting a 74, the Spartans turned in a 291 team score and are tied with host Southern Utah for the top spot in the team race.

“This was, by far, the coldest (weather) we’ve seen. There was a complete white-out for half an hour,” said San Jose State coach John Kennaday about the day’s conditions that forced a delay in the Spartans’ opening round of the spring season. Temperatures dropped into the mid-30’s and wind gusts of over 20 miles per hour were recorded during the day.

“Our guys fought hard. They’re learning how to fight hard and compete. It’s something we’ve worked on during the break. It was very nice to see on a very difficult day. We were undaunted and we went at it.

“They (Myers and Conrad) didn’t let anything bother them. By no stretch, did we play our best golf. We have more in the tank.”

Myers is tied for fourth in the 100-player field. Conrad is tied for seventh. Valentine and Hubbard are among a large group tied for 15th place giving San Jose State four scoring players in the top-20.

Washington State’s Nick Ellis leads the individual race with a 69.

Originally scheduled for 54 holes, the tournament will conclude with 18 holes on February 10. All 18 holes must be played for the tournament to count.
