Men's Golf Opens Spring Season In St. George, Utah

    The San Jose State University men’s golf team opens its 2009 spring season as one of 14 teams entered in the 5th annual Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational hosted by Southern Utah University, February 8 & 9.

    Fourteen teams are entered in the two-day, 54-hole tournament taking place at the Sunbrook Golf Course in St. George, Utah. Par is 72 with the players tackling 6,758 yards.

    Head coach John Kennaday has six golfers, seniors Aaron Conrad and Rosco Valentine, junior Stephan Stallworth, sophomores Mark Hubbard and Peter Gibbs, and freshman Jay Myers  in the field. Five will play for the Spartans in team competition and the sixth will compete for individual honors.

    As a team, San Jose State is ranked 106th in the pre-spring GolfStat rankings. Three teams, Denver (69), Washington (84) and Cal State Northridge (100), are ranked in the top-100 NCAA Division I rankings.

    Boise State (142), College of Charleston (161), UC Riverside (210), Dixie State (no ranking), Grand Canyon (46, Division II), Oral Roberts (137), Southern Utah (182), Utah State (171), Utah Valley (no ranking), Weber State (176) are in the field.

    San Jose State is coming off of a strong fall finish. The Spartans were third at the Kauai Collegiate in Hawaii and set a school record with a 21-under par 843 total.

    All players are scheduled to play 36 holes on February 8 and 18 holes the follow day. A team’s best four scores in each round will count towards the team score.
