Spartans Moving Up At Amer Ari Invitational

Waikaloa, Hawaii -- The San Jose State men's golf team moved up five spots into a tie for 12th place after shooting an even-par 288 on the second day of the Amer Ari Invitational on February 2.

"Our guys played better today and put the team in a much better position," said Spartans' head coach John Kennaday. "They were able to make a good improvement under tougher conditions."

Matthew Hovan and Justin Estrada helped the Spartans' cause by both shooting a one-under 71 on the 7,074-yard par 72 King's Course at Waikoloa Beach Golf Club.

Hovan spread out three birdies and made two bogies in his round which kept him in the hunt for the individual championship at six-under par through 36 holes. Pontus Widegren of UCLA is the tournament leader at nine-under par.

"Matt played well," said Kennaday. "We are sticking to the game plan as a team and right now Matt is leading us in that."

Estrada birdied four of his last five holes giving him a six shot improvement from yesterday's round of 77.

Daniel Semmler bounced back from a 78 yesterday to shoot even par in round two and Jay Myers made birdies on his last two holes giving him a 74 for the round. Myers is four over for the tournament.

Also for the Spartans Christopher Lang shot a four-over par 76.

The final round of the 54-hole event will begin tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. Live statistics for the Amer Ari Invitational can be found at www.golfstat.com
