Waikaloa, Hawaii --Matthew Hovan fired a five-under par 67 to lead the San Jose State men's golf team which sits in a tie for 17th place out of 20 teams at the completion of 18 holes at the Amer Ari Invitational in Waikaloa, Hawaii.
The Spartans shot 293 (+5) as a team in the play-five, score-four format and are deadlocked with Western Athletic Conference opponent Hawaii in 17th place.
Hovan made his first of six opening-round birdies on the par-five fourth hole at the 7,074-yard par 72 King's Course at Waikoloa Beach Golf Club. He put a four-under 32 on the front side together with a one-under 35 on the back for a 67, and is tied for fourth place individually.
Jay Myers, the Spartans' stroke average leader heading into the Amer Ari Invitational, finished with a 74 (+2), with three birdies, three bogies and double on the par-four ninth.
Christopher Lang came in with a three-over par 75 after finishing his round with four birdies in the last six holes. Justin Estrada also grabbed a couple strokes back late in the round when he birdied his last two holes before resting at a five-over 77.
Also for the Spartans, Daniel Semmler finished his round at six-over 78.
#1-ranked University of Texas sits on top of the team leader board at 18-under 270, five strokes ahead of the second place team, #4-ranked UCLA.
Patrick Grimes of Stanford, Cheng-Tsung Pan of Washington and Pontus Widegren of UCLA all shot 66 and are tied for the lead at six-under.
Round two of the 54-hole tournament will resume tomorrow morning with 18 holes beginning with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m.
