Men's Golf Concludes Fall Season Finishing 15th At The Gifford Collegiate

CARLSBAD, Calif. – The San José State men’s golf team concluded their fall season at The Gifford Collegiate tournament on Wednesday by finishing in 15th place. The Spartans shot 66-over 918 during the three-day, 54-hole tournament at the par-71, 6,996-yard La Costa Legends course.

Only six golfers in the 81-player field were under par in the final round and five others were able to match par.  None of the schools in the 15-team field broke par as the University of Washington had the low round of the day at two-over 286 to help win the tournament in six-under 846.

Three Huskies finished in the top-five, including co-champions Chris Babcok and Corey Pereira at four-under 209. Maverick McNealy, the number one ranked NCAA Division I men’s golfer by Golfstat.com, from Stanford was also a co-champion.

For the third consecutive day, none of the Spartans broke par as the low rounds of the day belonged to Brett Thawley and Cody Blick at two-over 73.

Thawley had his best finish as a Spartan finishing tied for 51st at 12-over 225. The sophomore’s previous best finish was a 54th place tie at the Western Intercollegiate last spring.

Blick, the number five ranked men’s golfer by Golfstat.com, had three birdies and five bogeys for the round to finish tied for 39th at nine-over 222. The Danville, Calif. native had finished no lower than third in the first three tournaments of the fall season.

Taylor Bromley shot eight-over 79 for the second round in a row and finished the tournament 18-over 231, finishing tied for 71st.

Kevin Velo and Matthew Murray finished 80th and 81st, respectively, at 243 and 244.

The Spartans resume action in the spring season starting on February 4 at the Amir Ari Invitational in Waikoloa, Hawai'i.
