CARLSBAD, Calif.
– The San José State men’s golf team continued to struggle in the second round of The Gifford Collegiate, shooting a 23-over 307. The Spartans remained in 15th place at 45-over 713 for the tournament at the par-71, 6,996-yard La Costa Legends course.

“We did not beat the course today, La Costa beat us as the course was pretty challenging with the various pin placements,” said Spartans head coach John Kennaday.

None of the Spartans broke par for the second consecutive day, but the bright spot was the play of Brett Thawley, who had the lowest round with a two-over 73. Thawley was even par through 16 holes until closing out with two bogeys. The sophomore is 10-over 152 for the tournament, tied for 60th place as he had a six-shot improvement in the second round over the first round.

“Thawley played fantastic today even though he didn’t finish up as he had hoped,” said Spartans head coach John Kennaday.

Cody Blick had an off-day shooting five-over 76, well above his season stroke average of 67.67 coming into the tournament, finishing his day with bogeys in four of the last five holes. Blick is now seven-over 149 for the tournament, tied for 48th. The Danville, Calif. native has shot over par in both rounds of the tournament, the first time he has shot over par this season.

Taylor Bromley and Matthew Murray shot eight-over 79 on Tuesday. Bromley is tied for 60th with Thawley at 10-over 152 for their two-day totals. Murray is in 80th place at 18-over 160.

Kevin Velo made a three-shot improvement in the second round, shooting nine-over 80. Velo is in 81st place at 21-over 163 for the tournament.

“We need to work on a number of different things like our short game and strategy but we are learning. We will benefit from it down the line,” said Kennaday.

The University of Washington is atop the team leader board at eight-under 560 as Husky Corey Pereira is atop the individual leader board at five-under 137.

The third and final round of The Gifford Collegiate will conclude on Wednesday with 18 holes.  Fans can follow with live scoring updates provided by Golfstat (
