El Paso, Texas --- San José State's Cody Blick shot a 5-under 67 to lead San José State in the opening round of the Price's Give `Em Five Invitational in El Paso, Texas on Friday.
Blick strung together four birdies in a row on holes 10-14, and another birdie on the 18th put him at -5 in a tie for sixth place on the individual leader board.
"After a tough start Cody really got it going on the back nine," said Spartans' head coach John Kennaday.
As a team, the Spartans shot 287 (-1) on the 7,307-yard par 72 Butterfield Trail Golf Club, and are in a tie for 10th place out of 14 teams.
Landon Polterock's 70 (-2) was the only other SJSU score under par. Taylor Bromley, in a tie for 51st, shot a 73 (+1). Henrik Sohlberg shot 77 (+5) and is tied for 76th, while Scott Munger put in an 82 (+10) and is 84th.
"We need to stop seeing shots as threats to our scores," Kennaday said. "We need to start seeing them as opportunities. We need to just play the golf course instead of letting the course play us."
Brett Thawley added an even-par 70 as an individual in his first round as a Spartan.
UTSA at -21 leads the tournament by five shots over #43-New Mexico State. The Aggies' Isaac Merry at -9 holds a two shot lead on the individual leader board.
Round two of the 54-hole even begins with tee times starting at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday. Live scoring is available via Golfstat.
