Spartans Second After 36-Holes At Alister MacKenzie Invitational; Blick First Individually

Freshman Kevin Velo's opening round six-under 65 was lowest debut round for a Spartan since 1993-94
Oct. 12, 2015

FAIRFAX, Calif. -- The San José State men’s golf team sits in second place, behind host Cal, posting a 24-under 544 after back-to-back rounds of 12-under 272 at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational as various school records were broken or nearly broken.

The 24-under 544 team score on the par-71, 6,734-yard Meadow Club course is the second lowest 36-hole total, as well as in relation to par, behind the 26-under 542 score from the 2011-12 season’s BSU Dash Thomas Memorial tournament.

Individually, senior Cody Blick leads the field at 13-under 129, becoming the first Spartan to break 130 over 36-holes. The Danville, Calif. native’s day included one eagle, 12 birdies and only one bogey. In the first round, Blick ran off three consecutive birdies after carding the day’s lone bogey on the 18th (Blick started his day on the fifth hole). The senior had an even better stretch in the second round by rattling off four consecutive birdies starting with the 12th hole, in a bogey free round en route to his record setting day.

“Cody is an exceptional young player. Tomorrow will be great experience for him being in the final pairing,” said Spartans head coach John Kennaday.

Freshman Kevin Velo, making his Spartan debut, also had an outstanding day finishing 5-under 137 putting him in a tie for 19th. Velo’s opening round six-under 65 is the lowest score in relation to par in a Spartan debut since the 1993-94 season.

Kevin’s made wonderful progress the last couple of weeks and today, he saw some of the results from the hard work he’s been putting in,” said the Spartans head coach.

Another Spartan newcomer, junior college transfer Matthew Murray had a steady day in only his second Spartan start by carding a 2-under 69 in both the morning and afternoon rounds to finish tied for 24th at 4-under 138.

Sophomore Matthew Ashley had a career best 5-under 66 in the second round, including an eagle on the par-5, 506 yard 15th hole. Ashley’s career round helped him get into the red overall as he finished one-under 141, good for a 40th place tie.

Senior Taylor Bromley’s first round three-over 74 was counted towards the team score as he finished the day at seven-over 149.

We stuck to the game plan better than we had in awhile as tomorrow will be a good experience,” said Kennaday without divulging the exact nature of the plan given the ongoing tournament which concludes on Tuesday with 18-holes of play.

The Spartans will try to catch up to the leader, University of California, who are six-shots ahead at 30-under 538 as they are looking to win the event for the seventh straight season.

The Alister MacKenzie Invitational concludes on Tuesday with one final round beginning at 7:45 a.m. PT.  The Spartans will tee it off on the first hole starting with Bromley at 8:50 a.m., Ashley at 9:00 a.m., Murray at 9:10 a.m., Velo at 9:20 a.m. and Blick at 9:30 a.m. Fans can follow all of the round three action with live scoring updates provided by Golfstat (Team Leader Board, Player Leader Board).
