Ann Arbor, Mich. - Cody Blick scorched the U-M Golf Course with a second round 64 and a 36-hole score of 132 (-10) to lead the 2013 Wolverine Intercollegiate by four shots with one round left to play.
"Cody stuck to the game plan and it's paying off for him," said head coach John Kennaday. "This course is an Alister MacKinzie design, so we have a familiarity in what we are seeing. Several of the courses we play, including Pasatiempo Golf Club, are MacKinzie designs. Here the fairways are narrow, the rough is up and there is a premium on putting the ball in the proper spot on the green. If you do that you have a chance to make some putts."
With today's 68 and 64, Blick has five sub-70 rounds to open the 2013-14 season. He was the only competitor on the day to card two round in the sixties and his 10-under, one-day total ranks in the top five of San José State men's golf in the last 20 years.
Starting on the 10th hole, Blick went out in five under with three birdies and an eagle, on the 417-yard par 4 16th hole. On his inward nine he got to six under with a birdie on three, his 12th hole, but after bogeys on three of the final five holes he carded an opening round 68.
In his second 18, five birdies on his first 13 holes got him to five-under before a bogey on the fifth hole, his 14th. He then birdied three of the final four holes for a 64, his lowest round as a collegian and the lowest round for a Spartan, in records available, since 1990. For the day he had one eagle, 12 birdies and four bogeys.
For Estrada, he had back-to-back 75s, which included three birdies in round one and two in round two. Polterock carded a 74 and 76. He also had five birdies on the day.
Taylor Bromley opened with a 78 and had a 77 in round two. His 155 (+13) leaves him in 51st place. Daniel Semmler shot a 75 in the first round and was in a tie for 29th place, but an 83 in the afternoon left him at 158 (+16) and in a tie for 54th place.
Michigan State leads after 36 holes with a 571 (+3) score. They are two strokes ahead of Lamar and host Michigan. San José State is in eighth place with a 584 (+16).
"This is a 54-hole tournament, so we are not out of it," said Kennaday. "Cody result is an example of what can be done if you stick to the game plan. If we all follow the plan we'll have a good finish."
For the final round, the Spartans go off the 10th tee at 8:45 a.m. ET on Tuesday. Blick, in the final group of the day, tees off at 9:21 ET. Fans can follow the action at www.sjsuspartans.com or golfstat.com.
