Burlington, Iowa --- San José State men’s golf shot a six-over 294 and sits in fifth place out of 12 teams with one round in the books at Golfweek’s Conference Challenge in Burlington, Iowa.

“We didn’t play our best today,” said Spartans’ head coach John Kennaday. “But we kept our head in the game and stuck to our game plan relatively well.”

Michael Grenz and Cody Blick both shot a one-over 73 to lead San José State on the 7,229-yard par 72 Spirit Hollow Golf Course. Scott Munger and Landon Polterock each shot an opening-round 74 (+2), and Matthew Ashley shot an 83 (+11).

“It was a tough round,” Kennaday said. “They held themselves together though, and we are glad we still have some golf ahead of us.”

Southeastern Conference representative LSU leads the tournament after shooting a 10-under 278. Stewart Jolly’s 67 (-5) gave him the individual lead.
