Ann Arbor, Mich. --- San José State men’s golf finished +12 on the first 36 holes of the Wolverine Intercollegiate in Ann Arbor Mich., on Saturday. The team’s opening-round 287 (+3) was the third-lowest out of the 11 teams in the field. A 293 (+9) in the second round put the Spartans in seventh place with 18 holes remaining at the 6,704-yard par 71 University of Michigan Golf Course.

Two Spartans, Cody Blick and Scott Munger, are positioned in the top-10 on the individual leader board.

“I’m happy with what I saw from the team today in our first two rounds of the season,” said Spartans’ head coach John Kennaday. “We sort of lost control of it in the second round, but we played well and guys were hitting good shots.”

There were good shots for SJSU, and then there were great shots.  Matthew Ashley knocked one in from 188 yards out for a double-eagle on the 530-yard par-five first hole. The same hole which his teammate Landon Polterock chipped in for eagle from a green-side bunker. Not to be outdone, Blick eagled the 310-yard par-four sixth hole by canning a shot from 97 yards out in the fairway.

Blick, the defending champion at the Wolverine Intercollegiate, made seven birdies on the day to go along with the eagle. After shooting 70-68-138 (-4), Blick sits in fourth place, five strokes behind the leader Chris O’Neill of Michigan.

Munger, in the first rounds of his Spartan career, shot 70-72-142 (E). His day was highlighted by a 34 (-2) on his back-nine of round one, which included all pars and two birdies. Munger is currently in a five-way tie for sixth place.

Polterock and Ashley both finished the day in a tie for 45th place. Polterock shot 74-76-150 (+8), while Ashley carded a 73 and a 77. Felix Möesmang finished +11, shooting rounds of 74 and 79.

Michigan stands far ahead as the 36-hole team leader shooting 278-280-558 (-10). Wisconsin sits in second place at +6.
