SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The San José State men’s golf team hosted another successful Western Intercollegiate tournament as Stanford earned its 10th Western Intercollegiate team title shooting nine-under 1041 (345-347-349).

The Cardinal was paced by Maverick McNealy’s record performance 16-under 194, breaking the 54-hole tournament record by five strokes.  The previous
record of 199 was held by Pepperdine’s Jason Allred in 2000 and Xavier’s John Streibich in 2007.

Aaron Wise of Oregon, who finished second, also broke the previous 54-hole tournament record with a 14-under 196.

The top-eight finishers in the team leaderboard were all ranked within GolfStat’s top-40 as the Spartans finished in 13th in the 14 team field.


San José State was led by Kevin Velo who shot a three-over 73 for the third consecutive round, to finish at nine-over 219.  The Danville, Calif., product started his round with six consecutive pars starting on the 12th hole before making a bogey on the 18th, which was the most difficult hole of the round, playing almost a full shot above par.  Velo dropped three more shots on the 1st and 2nd before stringing together seven consecutive pars as he made his first birdie of the day on the 10th.  The freshman closed his round with a par to finish tied for 42nd, moving up five places from the second round in his first Western.  

Scott Munger tied for 56th at 12-over 222 as his round included a team-high three birdies.

Matthew Murray played the back nine at one-over 36 and finished his round at six-over 76, and 14-over 224 for the tournament to place in a 62nd place tie.

Bradley Keyer made the lone eagle of the tournament for the Spartans on the par-5, 527 yard 13th hole en route to a six-over 76.  Keyer finished tied for 80th at 22-over 232.

Taylor Bromley and Henrik Sohlberg finished 23-over 233 and 26-over 236, respectively.

Next up for the Spartans, the Mountain West Conference Championship in Tucson, Ariz. April 22 – 24.
