Potter Leads Men's Golf After Opening Round At Bandon Dunes Championship

Bandon, Ore. - Freshman Marcus Potter fired a one-over par 72 to lead the San José State men's golf team to a tie for ninth place after one round of the 2014 Bandon Dunes Championship.

Potter, teeing off on the eighth hole of the par 71, 6,603-yard Pacific Dunes golf course, was one-over after two holes, but a birdie on the 12th, his fifth hole of the day, got him back to even at the turn.  He birdied the first hole of his back nine, but in his final eight was two over and finished at one-over par (72) and in a tie for 15th place.

Justin Estrada had a rough start, finding himself four-over par after 13 holes.  He rallied for a birdie on the first hole, his 14th, and then picked up another on the third hole, his 16th, on his way to a two-over par 73.  He is tied for 27th place.

Cody Blick is in a tie for 40th place after shooting an opening round 74.  He had a bogey to start his day, but back-to-back birdies on 10 and 11, his sixth and seventh holes of the round, got him to the turn at one-under.  Bogeys on five of the first seven holes on his inward nine left him at four-over par after 16.  He rallied with a birdie on the third hole, his 17th of the day and finished at three-over par.

Daniel Semmler pared the first seven holes of his round, but made the turn at three-over.  He got two strokes back with a pair of birdies, but suffered a double bogey his 16th hole of the day and signed for a 74, three-over par and in a tie for 40th place.

Landon Polterock made the turn at one-over par after a birdie and two bogeys in his first nine holes.  He found himself at five over after three holes of his back nine.  Back-to-back birdies on his next two holes got him to three over and his finished the day with a 76, five-over par and tied for 58th place.

Missouri lead the team competition by one stroke after firing a three-under par 281.  San Jose State is tied for ninth place with a 293.

Missouri's Emilio Cuartero, Utah Valley's J.T. Timmons and host Gonzaga's Peter Gullickson share the lead for individual medalist.  Each fired a four-under par 67 and have a one stroke advantage over four other golfers.

Second round action begins with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on Monday.  The Spartans will be playing with host Gonzaga, Rice and Boston College and will tee of on holes one through four.  Fans can follow the action at www.golfstat.com.
