Somis, Calif. - The San José State Men's golf team shot a 36-hole total of 617 (+41) on the opening day of the Jones Sports Invitational and find themselves in eighth place heading into the final 18 holes on Tuesday.
Cody Blick bogeyed his first hole of the day, the par 3 13th at the 6,985-yard, par 72 Saticoy Country Club, on his way to a two-over par outward nine. He didn't record his first birdie of the day until his 17th, the par 4 11th, and signed for a four-over par 76. On his second 18, he was five-over par after six holes and finished the round there for at 36-hole total of 153 (+9). Blick is tied for 28th place.
In his first action of the spring, Justin Estrada, was one-over on his opening nine with a pair of birdies and three bogeys. He birdied his 10th hole, the par 5 8th, to get back to even, but then six bogeys coming home left him with a six-over par 78. His second round started with two bogeys and a double bogey after four holes. He carded three birdies in the next six to get back to one-over. He finished the last eight holes in two-over par for a three-over total (75), the best round of the day for the Spartans. Estrada is tied with Blick for 28th place at 153 (+9).
Daniel Semmler had a par, bogey and birdie in his first three holes of the opening round and made the turn at two-over. He pared his first six on the backside, but two bogeys in the final three holes got him to the clubhouse with a 76. On his second 18, he found himself at five-over after 10 holes. A birdie on the 8th hole, his 11th, got one stroke back, but a double bogey four holes later got him to the clubhouse with a 76 and a two round total of 154 (+10). He is tied for 35th place.
Marcus Potter had six bogeys in his first 13 holes of the tournament. His only birdie of round one came on the 11th hole, his 15th, but a pair of bogeys on the next two holes put him at 79, (+7). He carded a pair of birdies in the second round, but finished at six-over par (78). His two round total of 157 (+13) ties him for 42nd place.
Landon Polterock recoded just one birdie on his way to an opening round 82. His struggles continued in the second round with an 85. His 36-hole 167 total (+23) slots him into 64th place.
In the team competition, Southern California has a four-shot lead over San Diego State after shooting a 36-hole total of 585 (+9). San Diego State's Riccardo Michelini and Southern California's Anthony Paolucci share the lead for individual medalist. They are each at one-under par (143) with 18 holes to play.
The tournament concludes on Tuesday with players going off the first and 10th tees beginning at 7:30 a.m. Live stats are available at www.golfstat.com.
