WAIKOLOA, Hawai’i – The San José State men’s golf team shot a three-over 291 for the second consecutive day to finish tied for 13th place, equaling its best finish ever at the Amer Ari Intercollegiate. The Spartans also finished 13th in 2012 and 2013.

“We found out a lot of good stuff this weekend. We shot one of our best scores out here and found a way to get the ball to the hole more efficiently,” said Spartans head coach John Kennaday.

A trio of Spartans finished in the top-36 out of a 115 player field to help the team finish the tournament at three-over 867 (285-291-291). It was the second best score ever at Amer Ari, behind the 864 score which was shot in 2014.

Freshman Kevin Velo led the way for the Spartans at two-under 214, placing him tied for 30th. During the first two rounds, the Danville, Calif., native shot eight-under on the par-5 holes, however on Saturday, he shot them in even-par with a pair of birdies and a double-bogey as he posted a three-over 75.

Senior Taylor Bromley and sophomore Scott Munger both finished at one-under 215, good for a 36th place tie for their best finishes of the season. Playing in his fifth tournament of the year, Bromley’s previous best finish was a 51st place tie at the fall season opener, the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Iowa. Munger’s previous best finish was a 42nd tie, also at the Golfweek Conference Challenge.

Bromley’s final round 70 on the par-72, 7,074-yard Kings’ Course was a season-low as he dropped in four birdies along with two bogeys.

Sophomore Matthew Murray shot a two-over 74 to count towards the team score as he had an eagle on the 18th hole.

Brett Thawley and Bradley Keyer shot 77 and 80, respectively. Both finished 11-over 227 for the tournament.

#7-ranked Southern California took the team title over rival UCLA, beating them by two-strokes at 29-under 835. Nine of the 12 schools that finished ahead of San José State were ranked nationally.

"We had a good chance to beat the number one-ranked team in the nation," lamented Kennaday, as the Spartans were overtaken by #1-Auburn on Saturday.

The top-three individual finishers were from Pac 12 schools as Aaron Wise of Oregon finished two-strokes ahead of Southern California’s Rico Hoey, carding a 16-under 200. Maverick McNealy of Stanford, the nation’s number two-ranked player, finished third.

The Spartans play next at the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Ariz., from February 28 – March 1.
