WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i
- The San José State men's golf team shot a three-under 285 and sits in seventh place after the first round of the Amer Ari Intercollegiate, played on the par-72, 7,074-yard Kings' Course.

Led by sophomore Scott Munger's three-under 69, all five Spartan starters plus Bradley Keyer, who was playing as an individual, shot one-over or lower. Collectively, the Spartan starters led the field with 22 birdies.

"The team did a fine job of sticking to the game plan," said Spartans head coach John Kennaday.

Munger shot a bogey free four-under in the back nine to help him finish tied for eighth in the tournament with a three-under 69.

"Scotty (Munger) certainly has shown this before as he played and scored well," said Kennaday alluding to Munger's third place tie in last season's Wolverine Intercollegiate.   "But its early yet as we still have 36 holes left."

A trio of Spartans, senior Taylor Bromley, sophomore Brett Thawley and freshman Kevin Velo, shot even-par 72 as they sit in a 45th place tie.

Bromley got off to a rough start to his round, bogeying four of the first five holes, but recovered to shoot six birdies in the remaining 13 holes.

Thawley's first round consisted of three birdies and three bogeys, with all but one bogey coming in the front nine.

Velo feasted on the four par-5 holes at the second, fourth, 14th and 18th as he birdied each one to help him with the even par round.

Redshirt freshman Bradley Keyer had a solid debut to his college career by shooting one-over 73.

"Its been a long and hard process for him with the redshirt last year but we are excited to get him started and get going," said Kennaday.

Sophomore Matthew Murray shot one-over 73 with three birdies and four bogeys.

The Spartans are seven shots off the tournament leaders Stanford and Southern California, the fifth and seventh ranked teams in the nation according to Golfstat. The six teams ahead of the Spartans are all ranked in the top-36, including #23 UCLA, who sits in third place, #30 Oregon, #16 Oklahoma State and #36 Texas Tech. The Spartans are ahead of three nationally ranked teams, including #1 Auburn who sits at five-over 293.

Conner Kumpula of Oregon State sits atop the leader board at six-under 66.
