Men's Golf Tied For 11th At Amer Ari Invitational

Waikoloa, Hawaii----- For San Jose State University, the second-round of the Amer Ari Invitational men's golf tournament hovered around par the entire day. No player was more than one-under and no player was more than three-over par on the 7,074-yard Waikoloa Kings Golf Course.

The result was a one-over par 289 team score and a tie for 11th place at five-under par 571. Oklahoma State, #2-nationally according to GolfStat and second after 18 holes, blistered the course with a 21-under par 267 for a 547 total and a nine-stroke lead.

Georgia Tech and Texas Tech are tied for second at 556. Southern California and first-round leader Texas are tied for fourth at 558.

"We got a little ahead of ourselves. We didn't have our best day out there today. We focus well when we focus on the process. We need to get back into the process tomorrow," said San Jose State head coach John Kennaday whose team is facing seven of the top-20 teams in the country according to GolfStat.

"I was happy with the way our guys fought. They hung in there today."

Junior Kevin Velo is the top Spartan after 36 holes. After an even par 72, he is at three-under 141 and tied for 23rd place. Sean Yu also matched par and is tied with teammate Sean Talmadge and six others for 32nd at 142. Talmadge was the only San Jose State player under par in the second round with a one-under 71.

Matthew Murray who had a three-stroke improvement from his first round and Ben Campbell each signed for a 74. Campbell is at 146 and Murray has a 151.

Oklahoma State's Hayden Wood fired a seven=par 65 and vaulted to the top of the leaderboard with a 134 total for 36 holes. Southern California's Justin Suh is in second place at 135 after a 66.

The 54-hole tournament concludes with 18 holes on Saturday, February 3.
