2016 San José State record: 4-8, 3-5 Mountain West. The Spartans finished the season tied for third in the Mountain West's West Division.

2016 USF record: 11-2, 7-1 American Athletic Conference. The Bulls finished the season tied for first in the conference's East Division, won the Birmingham Bowl over South Carolina, 46-39 in overtime, and finished 19th in the final Associated Press and USA Today coaches polls.

San José State head coach Brent Brennan: In his first season as a major college head coach. Brennan returns to San José State after six seasons as a receivers coach at Oregon State. He was a Spartan assistant coach during the 2005 through 2010 seasons. He is 0-0 as a head coach against USF.

USF head coach Charlie Strong: In his first season as the head coach of the Bulls. Has a record of 0-0 at South Florida. Overall, he begins his eighth season as a major college head coach and has a record of 53-37. He is 0-0 as a head coach against San José State.

Series history: This is the first meeting between these teams. The home-and-home series concludes with a game in Tampa, Fla., in the 2020 season.

Play-by-Play Radio Coverage: KLIV (1590 AM, San José) originates San José State football broadcasts. Justin Allegri calls the play-by-play. Kevin Richardson provides commentary. The USF broadcast begins at 4:00 p.m. (PT) with a pregame show.

San José State has two network affiliates. KION (1460 AM/101.1 FM, Salinas), ESPN Desportes (860 AM, San Francisco)

KSJS (90.5 FM, San Jose) also will broadcast the USF game live.

Television: The CBS Sports Network will televise the San José State-USF game. Ben Holden calls the play-by-play. Randy Cross provides analysis. John Schiffren is the sideline reporter. The CBS Sports Network telecast begins at 4:30 p.m. (PT).

Promotional Activities: The Air Force Wings of Blue parachute team returns to Spartan Stadium to kickoff the 2017 season. The Wings of Blue had a five-person team parachute into the CEFCU Stadium and the South Campus football practice field for the 2016 home season finale against Air Force.

For the third year in a row at the Spartans' home-opening football game, San Jose State University students in attendance can lead the Spartans on to the field prior to kickoff.

Season openers: San José State has three wins in its last four season openers. Since 1898 when the Spartans began playing more than one game in a season consistently, San José State is 41-51-4 all time in season-opening games.

13-game regular-season schedule: For the first time since the 2010 season and fifth time in school history, San José State has a 13-game regular-season schedule. The Spartans also played 13 regular season games in 2002, 1939 and 1937.

Opening against a nationally-ranked opponent: For the 10th time, San José State begins a season against a nationally-ranked opponent. The USF game marks the first time San José State hosts a nationally-ranked opponent to start a season.

San José State is one of three: San José State, East Carolina and BYU are three schools that play three nationally-ranked teams according to the Amway/USA Today coaches poll among their first four games.

Last win vs. nationally-ranked team: The November 29, 2013 regular-season finale against #16-ranked Fresno State was the last time San José State defeated a nationally-ranked opponent. The Spartans won at home that afternoon, 62-52. Since then, San José State lost to nationally-ranked teams were at #5-Auburn (59-13) in 2014 and at #24-Boise State (45-31) in 2016.

Victorious San José State head coaching debuts: Since 1950 when San José State began playing a complete major college football schedule, five coaches won their first game as the Spartans' head coach. Ten were on the losing side and two tied.
