Three In A Row For San Jose State Men's Hoops

San Jose, Calif.-----James Kinney scored 14 of his game-high 20 points in the second leading San Jose State to a 62-57 win over Sacramento State in a non-conference men's basketball game.

The Spartans (5-3) picked up their third win in a row overcoming a 12-point first-half deficit.

San Jose State took its first lead of the second-half, 41-40, on Kinney's third 3-point basket of the game with 10:04 to go. His final three-pointer on the night put the Spartans ahead for good, 50-47, with 3:45 remaining.

Kinney played just 10 minutes in the first half after picking up his second foul. The Spartans could not figure out Sacramento State's switching defense from man to zone and trailed 20-8 when Kinney went to the bench.

LaVanne Pennington helped get San Jose State going offensively with three field goals in a 3:30 span. His final basket of the run finally got the deficit into single digits, 25-16 with 6:14 left in the half.

Both teams struggled offensively converting just 31.3 percent of their field goal tries each. San Jose State pulled away for the win making 8-of-10 free throws in the final 1:05. D.J. Brown scored all seven of his points making 7-of-8 from the line.

"Coach (Nessman) told us they're a solid team. They did not let us get any easy baskets," said forward Louis Garrett, who scored 7 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in a 23-minute stint off the bench.

The Spartans win marked the fifth time this season an opponent failed to make 40 percent of its field goal tries.

"We can't play artfully every night out, but we can figure out a way to win. It's a tribute to our team that we found a way," said San Jose State head coach George Nessman after the team's first three-game winning streak since the 2011 season.

"Our bench - Aalim Moor, Xavier Jones, LaVanne Pennington, Louis Garrett and Stephon Smith - all came on the floor and contributed defensively."

Forward Chris Cunningham, with a game-high 17 rebounds, was the only other Spartan in double figures with 10 points. San Jose State out-rebounded Sacramento State (5-3), 59-34.

John Dickson led the Hornets in scoring with 16 points. Sacramento State's second loss in a row came on its poorest shooting night of the season.
