Kinney Scores 27 To Put Men's Basketball Over .500

Davis, Calif.-James Kinney scored 27 points and had a key steal in the second half to help fuel San Jose State to a 73-64 win at UC Davis Wednesday night.

Kinney finished the game 10-for-20 from the field and 5-for-8 from the free throw line.  He grabbed a game-high four steals, but his biggest steal came at 4:31 of the second half which led to a dunk and gave the Spartans a 64-59 lead and a spark on the bench.

"We needed a momentum changer," said Kinney.  "My dunk gave us a little boost in the second half.  Other than that, I think the dunk just gave our bench something to cheer about.    We shared the ball a lot tonight, and I know my teammates will find me."

The Spartans are above .500 for the first time this season.  The team committed a season-low 12 turnovers in the win, including just four in the second half.  San Jose State also held UC Davis to just 38.6 percent from the field and a season-low 64 points.

"This win is a big step in maturity for us," said Spartan head coach George Nessman.  "Our defense was a big key for us in our win tonight.  We won a lot of the 50-50 balls and you have to do that on the road to be successful."

Chris Cunningham recorded his second consecutive double-double and third of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.  D.J. Brown added 12 points, six assists and five rebounds for the Spartans.  In all, eight of the 10 players who saw action in the game scored for San Jose State.

San Jose State returns home for the next two games, starting with this Saturday's game against Sacramento State at 4:30 p.m. The game is part of a doubleheader with the women's team who host Southern Utah at 2:00 p.m.

"We are ready to come home and defend our homecourt," said Nessman. "We have had a great student turnout so far this season, and we hope everyone will come out and support this team."
