Kinney Goes For 30; Spartans Push Kansas To Brink

Lawrence, Kan.-----James Kinney put on a second-half show with 19 of his game-high 30 points, but the University of Kansas outlasted San Jose State University, 70-57.

The Spartans (2-3) and the 10th-ranked Jayhawks (5-1) exchanged big runs in the second half before Kansas pulled away for the win in the game's final two minutes. The Jayhawks' 18-0 rally was nearly offset by a subsequent 16-0 Spartan outburst.

Kinney was the only San Jose State player in double figure scoring with his season scoring high and third career game of 30 or more points. The Spartans needed all of the 6-foot-2 guard's output since they made just 29.2 percent of their field goal tries.

Kansas center Jeff Withey turned in his first career triple double scoring 16 points, grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds and blocking 12 shots. His offense on the low block with four baskets at their start of the second half keyed the Jayhawks' scoring spree to give Kansas a 60-36 lead with 11:42 remaining.

KINNEY, HERE; KINNEY, THERE; KINNEY EVERYWHERE

Then it was Kinney's turn to bring the Spartans back. Other than a rebound basket by freshman Mike VanKirk, a 3-pointer by Louis Garrett, and one Chris Cunningham free throw, it was Kinney with two 3-point baskets and a variety of shots that brought the few San Jose State fans to their feet.

Kinney's double-pump lay-in off a steal cut the deficit to single digits for the first time since the 40-32 halftime score at 62-54 with 4:18 remaining. Then, he nailed his fourth 3-pointer of the game from deep on the right wing leaving Kansas with just a 64-57 lead with 2:40 to go for San Jose State's last score in the game.

BALANCED KANSAS SCORING

Three other Jayhawk starters, Travis Releford, Ben McLemore, and Elijah Johnson finished with 13 points in a balanced offensive attack.  Kansas had its problems shooting, too, making just 43.3 percent and settled for a number of perimeter shots that went awry during San Jose State's 16-0 run over nearly a 6-minute, 30-second span.

San Jose State outrebounded Kansas, 45-41. Forward Chris Cunningham led the Spartans with 11 before fouling out. San Jose State also got effective play from 7-foot-1 VanKirk who played 19 minutes, grabbed five rebounds and was credited with three steals to go along with his basket during the Spartans' second-half rally.

San Jose State returns home and is back in action, December 1, at Montana State. Game time is 12:00 p.m. (MST).
