New Orleans, La.-James Kinney picked up his scoring from where he left off last season, leading the Spartans in scoring with 23 points, but missed free throws and dunks and foul problems contributed to San Jose State's 72-68 loss at New Orleans Friday night.
Kinney led all scorers with his 23 points. He was 10-of-16 from the field including 3-for-6 from three-point range. He added five rebounds, three assists and three steals in 37 minutes played.
The Spartans (0-1) led by as many as 12 points in the first half and 10 points at 43-33 with 14:13 remaining in the game. New Orleans (1-0) slowly chipped away at the lead and took a lead at 55-54 at the 6:30 mark. The two teams then traded the lead over the next four minutes.
D.J. Brown hit his first three-pointer at 6:07 to give San Jose State the lead back at 57-55. UNO took the lead back at 58-57 at 5:26, and extended it to 60-57 before an Alex Brown dunk and a LaVanne Pennington jumper gave San Jose State the lead back at 61-60 with 3:51 remaining. D.J. Brown made his second three-pointer with 2:40 remaining to give the Spartans a 66-62 lead.
The Spartans looked in control of the game, but a missed open dunk by Alex Brown with 2:11 on the clock would have extended the team's lead but instead energized the Privateers. Brown also had chances to score at the free throw line but missed six consecutive chances including two in the final minute of the game.
San Jose State also found itself in foul trouble throughout the game. In the first half, five players, including three starters, found themselves with two or more fouls. The second half found Chris Cunningham fouling out with 5:51 left in the game as he ended his first Spartan game with four points and a team-best seven rebounds. D.J. Brown and Alex Brown played with four fouls to end the game.
"The story of tonight's game was the foul trouble we got into, the turnovers we committed and the free throws we missed," said Spartan head coach George Nessman. "There were some good stretches in the game, but we did not keep our composure down the stretch in a tough environment. It is hard to win on the road, and we had our opportunity to get one."
San Jose State was just 7-of-17 from the free throw line and committed 20 turnovers in the loss. The team did shoot 51.8 percent from the field for the game.
LaVanne Pennington came off the bench and scored a career-best 13 points as he was 6-for-10 from the field. Alex Brown scored nine points and blocked two shots in his Spartan debut. Stephon Smith came off the bench and contributed seven points, six rebounds and a blocked in 26 minutes played.
San Jose State begins a three-game home stint with games against Houston on Tuesday at 7 p.m., Weber State on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and UC Santa Cruz on November 20 at 7 p.m. All games will be played at The Event Center.
