Men's Hoops Easy Exhibition Winner

San Jose, Calif.------A pair of Browns, guard D.J. and center Alex, propelled San Jose State to an 88-54 exhibition win over Academy of Arts University.

D.J. Brown scored 22 points and 6-foot-11 Alex Brown added 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Spartans. The 6-foot-11 junior college transfer from John A. Logan College also was credited with five blocked shots in his debut. Forward Chris Cunningham was a third double-figure scorer for the Spartans with 13 points.

"It was a good effort by everybody. I think we played well," said D.J. Brown, one of three returning starters from last year's team.

The outcome was never in doubt after the first four minutes. San Jose State led 28-14 after 10 minutes and 50-24 at halftime.  The Spartans led by as many as 37 points in the second half.

"Our emphasis was to take advantage of every minute. We're not taking plays off. Coach (Nessman) really emphasized it and it's been instilled in us since the beginning," said the 6-foot-9 Cunningham, who played his first game for San Jose State after transferring from Santa Clara University in 2011.

San Jose State used its size advantage throughout the game on both ends of the floor. The Spartans outrebounded the Urban Knights, 55-38, and blocked seven shots.

"We're going to be physical; we've got some good length, have a toughness and will be athletic," said San Jose State head coach George Nessman about his team's inside play.

"We're ten times better in the post. We have a little bit of everything. We shot blockers and length. We have people who can score from the inside and the outside. We're really well-rounded," added Cunningham.

Academy of Art was led in scoring by forward Rodrigo Maza with 14 points.  Ameer Shamsud-din with 13 and Alex Carmon with 12 points also were in double figures. The Urban Knights made just 29.5 of their field goal tries.
