Men's Basketball Hosts Exhibition Game Thursday

San Jose-Looking to get ready for the 2012-13 regular season, the San Jose State men's basketball team hosts Academy of Art in an exhibition game on Thursday, November 1, at The Event Center at 5 p.m.

The Spartans return five letterwinners including leading scorer and second team Preseason All-WAC honoree James Kinney.  A senior guard, he averaged 15.8 points per game and scored in double-figures in 23 games.

Kinney set the San Jose State single season records with 86 three-pointers made on 216 attempts.  Nationally, he finished the year ranked 25th in three-point goals per game at 2.77, and 38th in three-point percentage at 39.8.

D.J. Brown and Stephon Smith also are returning starters from last season.  Brown averaged 7.7 points and 2.6 rebounds per game.  Smith averaged 3.9 point and 2.9 rebounds per game.

The Spartans add five newcomers and transfer junior Chris Cunningham to the floor this season.  Cunningham, a 6-9 forward, transferred from Santa Clara and sat out last season.  Three other juniors join the team - Alex Brown, 6-11 center; Louis Garrett, 6-6 forward; and Xavier Jones, 6-4 guard.  Two freshmen also bring their talents to the Spartans - David Andoh, 6-7 forward; and Mike VanKirk, 7-1 center.

This game is the final tune-up for San Jose State before they open regular-season play at New Orleans, next Friday, November 9, at 8 p.m. CDT/6 p.m. PDT.  The Spartans home opener is against Houston on Tuesday, November 13, at 7 p.m.

"We treat this game as an important competition," said Spartan head coach George Nessman.  "If you are a competitor, whenever you take the field, you are measuring yourself against your opponent and your standards.  We have to judge ourselves to the standards we are holding ourselves to as well.  I am impressed by the intensity we have shown in practice and in scrimmages.

"This team is really worthy of support.  I think they will be a fun team to watch.  They have a lot of enthusiasm for basketball.  I also think is one of the physically toughest teams we have had here.  They just go at each other in real spirited way. We want to make the Event Center a place that is hard on our opponent and need our fans to do this."
