An early-season highlight for the San José State University men's basketball program will be its participation in the 2014 Wooden Legacy to be held at Titan Gym on the campus of Cal State Fullerton and the Honda Center in Anaheim during Thanksgiving weekend.
The ESPN family of networks will have live coverage of the eight-team, three-day, 12-game bracketed tournament to be played Thursday, Friday and Sunday, November 27, 28 and 30.
"Our team is excited to be a part of the 2014 Wooden Legacy," said San José State head coach Dave Wojcik. "Year in and year out, the Wooden Legacy is one of the best tournaments in college basketball. We look forward to representing the Mountain West and competing against top teams from across the country."
The opening two days of competition will be staged at Titan Gym. The four games on Sunday November 30 will be played at the Honda Center.
San José State, Princeton, Washington and Western Michigan will be participating in the Wooden Legacy for the first time. Long Beach State, San Diego, UTEP and Xavier will each be making their second appearance. The eight schools will represent the West Coast, Mountain West, Conference USA, Pac-12, Mid-American and Big East conferences.
Five of the eight teams saw postseason action in 2013-14. Xavier and Western Michigan were NCAA Tournament teams. Princeton and UTEP competed in the College Basketball Invitational post-season event while San Diego reached the quarter-finals of the College Insider Tournament.
The Spartans are returning four starters from 2013-14 as well as their leading scorer Rashad Muhammad who led the Mountain West in total three-point baskets made.
"It is an honor for us to be competing in honor of John Wooden," Wojcik said. Coach Wooden was one of the greatest teachers and developers of young men and is an inspiration to coaches around the country. His pyramid of success portrayed to coaches the foundation for championship programs."
The Wooden Legacy was formed in 2013 when two nationally-recognized in-season collegiate basketball events, the John R. Wooden Classic and the Anaheim Classic, joined forces.
The John R. Wooden Classic was established in 1994 as an annual tribute to the legendary coach and the excellence he personified. The first 17 John R. Wooden Classics featured a doubleheader.
