Colorado Springs, Colo. --- After leading the San José State men's basketball team to a pair of victories and extending the team's winning streak to four games, sophomore Brandon Clarke is the Mountain West Men's Basketball Player of the Week.
It's the third time Clarke has earned the honor this season, and he did it this time with averages of 17.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks in wins over San Diego State (2/7) and UNLV (2/11). "Brandon had another outstanding week," said Spartans' head coach Dave Wojcik. "He is a special player. He was a leader for our team and we picked up two big wins for our program last week."
The 6-foot-8 sophomore scored a game-high 22 points in the 76-71 win over San Diego State, lifting the Spartans to their first victory over the Aztecs since 1999. He was 11-of-15 shooting for the game and 8-of-9 in the second half.
He finished the week off with 13 points, seven rebounds and five blocks in San José State's 76-74 win at UNLV. Clarke had a six-point burst early in the second half that was part of a 9-2 run which gave the Spartans the lead and the momentum.
It is the first time since 1996 that the Spartans have won four straight conference games, and Clarke helped the team to a season sweep on UNLV, a first since the 1993-94 season.
Clarke is the first player to win the award three times this season and he's the second Spartan to be a three-time player of the week honoree joining Ricky Berry who did it in 1986-87.
