Senior Riley Spitser of the women’s swimming and diving team, and men’s basketball freshman Brandon Clarke are the Spartan Foundation’s January student-athletes of the month, presented by ScholarShare.
Spitser helped lead the Spartans to a 4-2 dual meet record in
January. While doing that, she set a new SJSU pool record with a 10:07.64 time in the 1000 freestyle against Nevada. She turned in a remarkable performance against Fresno State when she swam the 1000 freestyle and 200 freestyle back-to-back with less than five minutes of rest -- and won both events. Throughout the month, Spitser racked up 13 individual wins, while being part of six relay victories.
Clarke was the best all-around player for SJSU in the month of January, scoring 9.1 points per game while leading the team in rebounds (62), blocks (18) and shooting percentage (.708). In two Mountain West wins, Clarke averaged 11.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks. In the final three minutes of the win over Wyoming, he forced two turnovers from the conference’s leading scorer Josh Adams and blocked a shot on the baseline. Clarke recorded back-to-back double-doubles with 14 points, 12 rebounds at Fresno State and 13 points, 11 rebounds at Boise State.
