Women’s basketball senior guard Ta’Rea Cunnigan and men’s basketball sophomore guard Rashad Muhammad are the Spartan Foundation’s student-athletes of the month, sponsored by ScholarShare, for their outstanding accomplishments during January.
Cunnigan made history during the month of January when she scored the 1,768th point of her career and became San José State’s all-time leading scorer in basketball, including both women’s and men’s. She eclipsed the mark in an 88-78 victory over Boise State in front of the home crowd on January 21. She scored 25 points in that game, one of five 20-point performances in the month. She was named the Mountain West Player of the Week following her accomplishment. The senior from Winchester, Calif., averaged 18.8 points per game in eight contests during January, and she did it efficiently, shooting 51 percent from the floor. It is Cunnigan’s second consecutive player of the month honor.
Muhammad averaged 13.6 points over eight games during the month. He led the Spartans in scoring in five of those eight contests, and dropped a season-high 26 points on the road at Air Force on January 7. Muhammad sank 20 three-point baskets, which boosted him into the top-10 all-time at San José State for made threes in a career. Muhammad was a staple in the Spartans’ lineup during the month, averaging over 37 minutes per game.
