Spartans Make Two Straight & Four Of Last Five

San Jose, Calif.-----Forward Louis Garrett was one of four San Jose State players in double-figure scoring with 14 points as the Spartans outlasted the University of New Orleans, 71-64, in a non-conference men's basketball game.

Center Alex Brown and guard D.J. Brown each scored 13 and forward Chris Cunningham dropped in 11 and pulled down a team-high 9 rebounds as San Jose State (9-6) picked up its fourth win in its last five games. With the win, the Spartans matched last year's win total and avenged a 72-68 season-opening loss to New Orleans.

"What we didn't do the first game was we didn't get to the basket (on offense) and they were playing us with heavy pressure. The way that you fight heavy pressure is to attack and that's what we did," said Cunningham.

GARRETT GIVES THE SPARTANS A SECOND-HALF SPARK

Garrett was the key figure in the second half scoring nine points, blocking a shot and collecting his only rebound of the game that led to his final basket on a length-of-the court drive in a five-minute stretch before he fouled out with 4:27 remaining.

"Lou gave us a big lift when he came back in the game (in the second half)," said Alex Brown scored in double-figures for the first time this season. Brown now has a blocked shot in 15 consecutive games.

San Jose State won despite James Kinney scoring a season-low 9 points. Kinney came into the game eighth in scoring at 21.5 points a game and was 3-of-18 from the field and failed to make any of his seven 3-point basket tries.

DEFENSE KEYS ANOTHER WIN

"We always focus on three areas - ball security, defense and rebounding. We held our opponent under 40 percent shooting. That's always one of the keys. I don't think we've lost this year when we've held our opponent under 40 percent," said San Jose State coach George Nessman, whose team was charged with only nine turnovers compared to New Orleans' 19.

"The only area where we let down in was they beat us on the boards. They got to those long rebounds. Give them credit for having the tenacity to go after them," Nessman added about the 52-39 rebound discrepancy in the Privateers' favor. "No team has beat us on the boards like that all season."

New Orleans (3-11), winless on the road this season in eight games, finished up a six-game road swing covering 23 days in three time zones. Playing a pressure man-to-man defense just after the halfcourt line, the Privateers had trouble keeping the Spartans away from the basket. San Jose State's starting frontline of Cunningham, Garrett and Alex Brown combined to 16-of-27 with all but three of these field goals outside the key.

San Jose State led by as many as 11 points, 22-11, midway through the first half and led 37-27 at halftime.

New Orleans got as close as 56-53 with 7:23 remaining, but a Garrett blocked shot kept the Privateers from getting any closer the rest of the way. The Spartans built their lead back up to eight points on four occasions before the end of the game.

San Jose State limited New Orleans to 35.4 percent field goal shooting winning its second game in four nights.

Lovell Cook of the Privateers led all players in scoring with 20 points. Guard Ralensee Nelson was the only other New Orleans player in double-figure scoring with 11 points.
