Men's Basketball 2-0 in WAC Play With 80-67 Win

San Antonio, Texas-James Kinney had his seventh 20-plus point game of the season as San Jose State defeated UTSA, 80-67, Monday afternoon to start Western Athletic Conference play 2-0 for the first time in school history.

Kinney finished the game with 22 points, 19 in the second half.  He was 9-of-16 from the field including 4-for-7 from three-point range.  Kinney also dished out a season-high seven assists in 36 minutes of action.

Two other Spartans scored in double figures.  Chris Cunningham tied his season best with 19 points and was 6-for-6 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line.  He and Alex Brown led the Spartans in rebounding with eight each.

LaVanne Pennington came off the bench and tied his career high with 16 points, eight in each half.  He was 4-for-7 from three-point range and nailed a key three-pointer at the end of the first half to send the Spartans to the lockerroom with a 36-30 advantage.

San Jose State (7-5, 2-0) held the WAC's second-leading scorer Kannon Burrage to seven points below his average as he scored 11 points.  The Runners shot just 39.3 percent from the field, and the Spartans outrebounded another opponent, 35-29.

"This win was a good team effort for us today," said Spartan head coach George Nessman.  "This was not an easy trip, and we competed against two good teams.  We challenged UTSA and our interior defense stepped up and wore them out.

"LaVanne gave us a huge lift off of the bench with his 16 points.  Alex did a good job defensively and made it hard for them to score.  Chris (Cunningham) also had a nice rebounding output and wore out their inside guys.  James can go on runs and had a nice one in the second half."

Since joining the conference in 1996-97, San Jose State has never started the WAC   portion of the schedule 2-0.  The team returns home this week for WAC games against Idaho on Thursday and Seattle U on Saturday.  Both games begin at 7 p.m., inside The Event Center.
