San Jose, Calif. --- On a day when the San José State men's basketball team honored its three seniors before their final home game, the trio united for a curtain call beginning in the very first minute, and led the Spartans to a 68-63 victory over Boise State inside The Event Center.
In his only start of the season, Ivo Basor set the tone in the first 30 seconds by taking a charge on Boise State's top scorer James Webb III, who later fouled out. Princeton Onwas scored 10 straight points down the stretch, eight of which came from the free throw line. And Frank Rogers skied for the game clinching rebound off of Anthony Drmic's miss from downtown with 11 seconds left.
In the 30th meeting between the programs, it is just the third time San José State (9-21, 4-14 MW) has defeated Boise State (20-11, 11-7 MW), and the first since 2010.
Amid the seniors taking care of business, freshman Brandon Clarke notched his fifth double-double with a season-high 21 points and 10 rebounds. Clarke's stroke was on point from all over the floor, including three-point range, on the way to 9 of 12 shooting.
The game featured 10 lead changes and the two teams were tied for nearly six minutes of game time. Lonnie Jackson hit a three at the 11:02 mark in the second half to give Boise State a 49-47 advantage. But SJSU answered right back when Gary Williams, Jr., drove the lane hard for a bucket and the foul. Williams gave the Spartans the lead for good with the free throw.
Free throw shooting for San José State this season has not been pretty, but Saturday's 20-for-25 effort was a huge factor in the win. Onwas sank 12 of 14 from the stripe, a career-best. After he scored eight straight points from the line, he hit what ended up being San José State's only basket in the final 6:45, which put SJSU up 66-60 with 2:11 to play.
The Spartans' defense held Boise State to 37.9 percent shooting from the floor. Nick Duncan and James Webb III killed the Spartans in the first meeting when Boise State won by 25 points back on January 20. Saturday, the two each had 11 points and combined to go 7-for-17 shooting. Webb III picked up his fifth foul with 6:09 left to play. Drmic scored a team-high13 points for Boise State.
Williams, Jr., and Onwas with 14 points each joined Clarke in double-figure scoring for San José State.
The Spartans await the news of who they will face in the first round of the Mountain West Championship. Regardless of the opponent, #11-seed SJSU will tipoff against the #6-seed Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. PST inside the Thomas & Mack Center.
