Aldrete Chosen By Cardinals On Day 3 Of MLB Draft

NEW YORK – San Jose State University junior utility player Mike Aldrete was drafted Wednesday by the St. Louis Cardinals in the final day of the MLB First-Year Players Draft.
Aldrete was chosen with the 1,200th overall pick, going 22nd in the 39th round. Aldrete’s father, Mike Aldrete, Sr., is currently the bench coach for the St. Louis Cardinals. He served as an assistant hitting coach for the World Series champion Cardinals in 2011.
“Mike obviously has a relationship with the Cardinals. Certainly Mike is probably thrilled to death that he’d be selected by a team his father is associated with,” said San Jose State baseball head coach Sam Piraro.
Aldrete is the Spartans' second player drafted this season. Right-handed pitcher Zack Jones was taken on day two of the draft Tuesday by the Minnesota Twins.
Aldrete had a breakout season in 2012, his first year as a Spartan. He played in 32 games – 21 appearances as a relief pitcher and 11 games as a shortstop with eight starts – after transferring from Monterey Peninsula College. He led the team with a 6-1 record and earned two saves while posting a 3.51 ERA out of the bullpen. He was named to the Preseason All-Western Athletic Conference team as a utility player. Aldrete also flashed his bat at the plate, gathering his first career hit as a Spartan on Feb. 24 versus UC Santa Barbara and going 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored in the Spartans' 13-12 win over Santa Clara on March 3.
“Mike was a very valuable asset for us,” Piraro said. “Not only did he pitch for us, but we used him in the infield. He hit for us and he was a very versatile player. Mike was always a guy who was ready to go when called upon.”
Aldrete excelled as a relief pitcher, however. The right-hander did not allow a run or a hit in his first three career relief appearances as a Spartan. He also posted four separate streaks of three straight scoreless appearances, including a stretch from March 10-23 where he threw 7 1/3 shutout innings with four hits, no walks and seven strikeouts. His season-long outing of 3 1/3 innings came at Fresno State on April 15 where he gave up one run and struck out two in the Spartans' 11-2 win.
