Baseball Falls To New Mexico State 9-0

Las Cruces, N.M. – San Jose State managed only five hits and gave up two long balls in a 9-0 Western Athletic Conference loss to New Mexico State at Presley Askew Field on Saturday night.

Ryan Beck threw a complete-game shutout for the Aggies and was backed up by a couple of big home runs by Robert Lecount (12) and Quinnton Mack (3).

Beck improved to 7-3 scattering six hits and striking out three in his second complete game of the year.

Lecount, who homered twice in Friday’s game, belted a two-run shot in the fifth on Saturday to give the Aggies a 4-0 lead. Mack’s two-run shot came one inning later which extended the lead to 6-0. Lecount and Mack each finished the game with three RBI.

Mack’s homer came after an error extended the inning, and both runs against reliever Kyle Hassna were unearned. Designated hitter Parker Hipp knocked in the first two runs for NMSU with RBI-hits in the first and fifth innings.

“We were just outplayed today,” said Spartans’ head coach Dave Nakama. “It’s tough because we really have something to play for and then we get outplayed like that.”

Four runs were charged to Spartan right-handed starter D.J. Slaton. Slaton allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking five. The loss drops him to 3-6 in 12 starts this season.

First baseman Matt Carroll came up with two of the Spartans’ six hits, a couple of singles to the left side.
