Baseball Suffers 17-2 Loss To Stanford

Stanford, Calif. -- Giving up nine runs in the first inning doomed San Jose State from the very beginning in a 17-2 loss to No. 14 Stanford at Sunken Diamond at Tuesday night.

The Spartans (13-27) put a run on the board within the first four pitches of the game, but the Cardinal (23-12) sent 14 hitters to the plate in the bottom of the first and scored nine runs on six hits.

In the first, Justin Ringo blasted a grand slam over the right field wall for the first of his two homers and the first of five round-trippers for Stanford in the game.

Austin Wilson (7) also jacked two out of the yard against SJSU pitching.

Ringo homered again in the third for his fifth of the year and teammate Brian Ragira hit his seventh of the year as part of a four-run sixth inning for the Cardinal.

“We just did not pitch well at all,” said Spartans’ head coach Dave Nakama. “We gave up too many runs, and it was just a bad performance.”

San Jose State used seven pitchers in the game, none lasting longer than 2.0 innings. Stanford’s starter Bobby Zarubin pitched 5.0 innings and gave up five hits and one run on the way to his third win of the year.

Michael Gerlach led the game off with a double and came around to score two pitches later when Andre Mercurio singled him in.

Mitch Ravizza’s first hit as a Spartan was an RBI-double down the right field line to give SJSU its second run. Will Hein also collected the first hit of his Spartan career with a single through the right side during the seventh inning.

17 runs ties the most given up to Stanford with a 17-6 loss at Municipal Stadium on May 4, 2008.

The Spartans are back in action this weekend when they host Western Athletic Conference foe Seattle U for three games at Municipal Stadium. First pitch of game one is set for 6:00 p.m.
