Long Ball Hurts Spartans in 13-3 Loss To Patriots

San Jose, Calif. – San Jose State baseball gave up 16 hits and three round-trippers in a 13-3 loss to Dallas Baptist in the Western Athletic Conference opener at Municipal Stadium on Friday.

A 3-run shot by Duncan McAlpine in the fifth inning came two batters before Michael Miller’s 2-run homer, which gave the Patriots a commanding 7-0 lead.

After the Spartans (6-16, 0-1) answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, Dallas Baptist (12-10, 1-0) poured on three more runs in the sixth to make it 10-2.

Four different Patriots registered multiple RBI in the game. KJ Alexander picked up his three RBI by blasting a 3-run homer over the left field wall in the ninth inning to extend the lead to 13-3.

Johnny Melero takes the loss for the Spartans, falling to 0-2, after giving up 10 earned runs on 13 hits in 5.2 innings.

The Spartans scored all three of their runs in the fifth and sixth inning. After a hit and an error by Dallas Baptist in the fifth, Jacob Valdez plated Tim Quiery on a fielder’s choice for the first run. An RBI-double by Matt Lopez gave San Jose State its second run.

One of Sheldon Daquioag’s two hits in the game was an RBI single in the sixth inning that scored Andre Mercurio, making it 10-3.

Ricky Acosta was 3-for-3 on the evening and has now gotten a hit in four of the last five games for San Jose State. Michael Gerlach also racked up multiple hits, going 2-for-4.

Jake Johansen earned the win for Dallas Baptist, improving to 3-2 on the season.

“We weren’t tough at the plate, or on the mound,” said Spartans’ head coach Dave Nakama. “You have to just come back and be better tomorrow. We need to take better at bats early in the game.”

Game two of the three game series between the Spartans and Patriots begins at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Municipal Stadium. D.J. Slaton (0-4, 4.35) takes the hill for San Jose State facing Dallas Baptist’s Cy Sneed (2-0, 3.14).
