SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San José State University baseball team and Spartan Baseball alumni convened at Blethen Field Saturday afternoon to play the 2016 Alumni Game in front of dozens of family and friends.
Postgame festivities included a reception and barbecue outside of the Stephens Family Hitting Facility.
Many of the current and former Spartans saw action in the game, which ended in a 4-4 tie.
“You want to win this game, but that’s not the main emphasis. It’s mainly for our guys to interact with the alumni, make connections and those kinds of things,” said head coach Dave Nakama.
On hand as part of the nearly two dozen alumni playing in the game were Kevin Frandsen and Blake McFarland. McFarland was added to the Toronto Blue Jays’ 40-man roster in November and will compete in spring training for a spot on the big-league club, while Frandsen is coming off his ninth major league season.
“Those guys are professionals. They go about playing the game the right way, the way we want our guys to play. That’s important for our guys to see,” Nakama said.
The Spartans open the 2016 season on Friday, Feb. 19, against UC Irvine.
