Baseball Falls In 12-5 Slugfest At New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- San José State's baseball team pounded out 11 hits -- six of them going for extra bases -- but dropped the series opener at New Mexico, 12-5, Friday night at Lobo Field.

The Spartans (12-38, 5-20 MW) held a 2-0 lead after the first inning, but the Lobos (25-23, 14-11 MW) used three big innings late in the game to outlast San José State. The teams combined for 25 hits, including seven doubles, a triple and three home runs.

Brett Bautista put together a perfect 4-for-4 night the plate and drove in a run to lead the Spartans. Ozzy Braff (2-5, two runs, two doubles) and Shane Timmons (2-4, run, home run, RBI) posted multi-hit hit performances as well, while Joe Stefanki (1-4, double, RBI), Chris Williams (1-4, run, double) and Alec de Watteville (1-4, double) rounded out San José State's 11-hit outburst.

Dillan Smith (0-4) saw his nine-game reached base streak come to an end Friday night.

Kalei Contrades (3-9) was tagged for nine runs on nine hits in 6.2 innings of work. The senior right-hander walked a career-high five hitters struck out four. Myles Richard, Jonathan Hernandez and Josh Goldberg combined to work the final 1.1 frames.

The second game of the series gets underway Saturday at 2:00 p.m. MT/1:00 p.m. PT from Lobo Field.
