SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Fresno State's Jake Shull was masterful on the mound Friday night against San José State's baseball team, going the distance and allowing just one hit in the Bulldogs' 4-0 win at Municipal Stadium.

The Fresno State (22-24, 12-10 MW) junior right-hander walked five and only struck out three of the 32 Spartans he faced, but used three double plays and some timely pitching to keep San José State off the board.

"I think their guy did a great job. He dominated our hitters and he was a lot better than our hitters today," Spartans' head coach Dave Nakama said. "It's one of those games you have to tip your hat because he was really good. He did a great job for them."

San José State (11-35, 4-18 MW) was held hitless until the sixth, when Michael Breen (1-4) chopped Shull's two-out pitch into the hole at shortstop and beat out the throw.

Kalei Contrades (3-8) made his first Friday night since April 3 at Air Force and took the loss for the Spartans. The senior threw 124 pitches over his 7.0 innings of work and allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking four.

Myles Richard relieved Contrades and tossed scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth, yielding a lone hit.

The Bulldogs used a leadoff walk and a trio of singles in the top of the third to ignite a two-run rally that provided the only runs they would need on the night. Fresno State padded its lead in the sixth on a two-run home run by center fielder Taylor Tempel, who went 4-for-5 with a double, home run, three RBIs and two runs scored.

The second game of the series between San José State and Fresno State gets underway from Municipal Stadium at 1:00 p.m. Saturday. RHP Josh Nashed (3-4, 6.31) gets the ball for the Spartans, while the Bulldogs send LHP Anthony Arias (1-2, 5.14) to the bump.
