SAN JOSE, Calif. – UNLV broke out the bats for a five first-inning runs and never looked back in a 12-0 defeat of San José State in Friday night’s series opener at Municipal Stadium.

The Spartans (13-28, 5-17 MW) struggled to get anything going against UNLV (18-23, 9-10 MW) starter D.J. Myers (W, 4-2). Myers, who threw 6.0 scoreless innings against the Spartans in Las Vegas on March 4, had them off-balance again Friday night, scattering five hits in 7.0 shutout innings of work.

Dillan Smith (2-3, double) put together a multi-hit night. Aaron Pleschner (1-3, double), Shane Timmons (1-3) and Michael Breen (1-3) added hits.

The Rebels jumped on San José State hurler Graham Gomez (L, 2-5) for five runs on six hits in the top of the first inning and added three more in the third. Gomez rebounded to post four consecutive scoreless frames and set a new season high of 7.0 innings of work.

Two UNLV runs off reliever Eric Anderson in the eighth inning put the Rebels in double digits on the night, and two more off Robert Gaylord in the ninth gave them 12 on the night.

The series resumes Saturday at 2:00 p.m. from Municipal Stadium. Hilario Tovar (2-2, 5.30 ERA) will make his fourth start of the season, while UNLV counters with Kenny Oakley (4-4, 3.84 ERA).
