PULLMAN, Wash. -- The San José State baseball team was within 3-2 of Washington State midway through the sixth inning, but the Cougars came alive to secure a 14-2 win Saturday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Washington State (20-18) collected 17 hits on the afternoon and got a big day from infielder Ian Sagdal, whose four hits included a three-run homer.

Hilario Tovar (1-3) made the start for San José State (10-29) and took the loss, going 5.1 innings and allowing six runs on eight hits while walking five and striking out five.

Shane Timmons (2-4) and Brett Bautista (2-4) led the way for San José State, while Alec de Watteville (1-4, run), Chris Williams (1-3, run, HR, RBI) and Turtle Kuhualua (1-3) added hits.

Tovar got off to a shaky start in the bottom of the first. The freshman gave up three hits, walked two and was charged with a wild pitch and an error, allowing the Cougars to score three runs in the process.

The Spartans manufactured a run in the next frame to get on the board. De Watteville led off with a base hit through the left side, moved to second on Williams' groundout, advanced to third on Kuhaulua's single and scored on Dillan Smith's safety squeeze.

Williams brought San José State within one when he blasted Joe Pistorese's 0-1 pitch over the right field wall for his second career home run.

Tovar again ran into trouble in the fourth, but was able to get himself out of it. After pair of one-out singles put runners at the corners, Patrick McGrath laid down a safety squeeze attempt that Tovar pounced on and flipped to Joe Stefanki at the plate for the out.

From that point Washington State, went on to score five runs in the sixth, two in the seventh and four in the eight to run away with the third game of the series.

The Spartans will try to earn a split of the four-game set Sunday in a 12:00 p.m. start.
