San Jose, Calif. --- San José State was 3-for-16 with runners on base and got shutput for a 7-0 loss to Washington on Friday night at Municipal Stadium.

Johnny Melero started for SJSU and gave up four runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work. Seven of the eight hits came in the first three innings and Washington jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third.

Washington's Robert Pehl (3) hit for the cycle against Spartan pitching. He started it off with a solo home run in the first inning and completed it with a triple in the ninth.

Tyler Davis (3-1) was the winning pitcher for Washington. He tossed six innings of shutout ball, allowing five hits. Will Ballowe (1) earned his first save of the season with three innings out of the pen.

The Spartans were 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Jacob Valdez, Matt Lopez and Alec de Watteville each had two hits in the game.

"We're missing our two best hitters right now in the lineup, and it's tough on our offense," said SJSU head coach Dave Nakama. "That's two more hitters that the other team has to worry about and maybe they pitch differently to some of our other guys. We just aren't deep enough to have two good hitters out of our lineup."

The Spartans look to rebound tomorrow afternoon against UC Davis. Jonathan Hernandez (0-1, 5.40) will start for SJSU. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
