San Jose, Calif. --- San José State put three runs on the board early, but the bats went silent and #13-Cal Poly came out on top 5-3 at Municipal Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Spartans (2-7) touched up Mustangs (7-1) starter Justin Calomeni (2-0) for three runs on five hits in the first two innings. From then on Calomeni was in shut-down mode, retiring the last 10 batters he faced on the way to a win in 5.0 innings pitched.

An eighth-inning walk to Jacob Valdez was San José State's only base runner after the second inning.

"We had their starter on the ropes," said SJSU head coach Dave Nakama. "Then we allowed him to settle in. We loaded the bases and struck out three times. You can't do that."

A 2-run double by Jacob Valdez gave San José State a 3-2 lead in the second inning. Tyler Olivet and Alec de Watteville, who each singled earlier, scored on the play. The hit proved to be the last of the game for SJSU.

Cal Poly answered right back with two in the third inning. John Schuknecht had an RBI-double and Peter Van Gansen singled in a run to put the Mustangs up 4-3. Nick Torres launched his third home run of the year over the left-field wall in the fourth to make it 5-3.

Michael Wright (0-3) took the loss for SJSU giving up four runs, three earned, on five hits in 3.0 innings. Reed Reilly (3) picked up the save for Cal Poly

Weather permitting; the Spartans are scheduled to take on Pacific Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m. at Municipal Stadium.
