San Jose, Calif. --- San José State allowed a season-high 19 hits in a 10-1 loss to UC Santa Barbara at Municipal Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Gauchos (3-1) scored three runs on five hits in the first inning and never looked back.

"We just got off to a bad start and couldn't recover," said Spartans' head coach Dave Nakama. "That's too good of a team to fall behind like that. We put pressure on our offense which hasn't been very good. It was just one of those games."

San José State (2-6) starter Jace Puckett (0-1) allowed hits to five of the first six batters he faced. Robby Nesovic had a 2-run single and Tyler Kuresa added an RBI-single to give UCSB a 3-0 lead in the first. Kuresa finished with four RBI on the day.

Six Gauchos finished the day with a multi-hit game, four of which finished with multi-RBI. Joey Epperson hit his first home run of the season in the seventh. The 2-run shot extended UCSB's lead to 10-1.

The Spartans scored their only run of the day on an RBI-single in the third inning by Jacob Valdez. The hit was one of five for SJSU on the day and it scored Tyler Olivet who reached on an error to begin the inning.

"We just didn't play well all weekend," said Nakama. We could have been swept this weekend."

The Spartans were 1-4 in five games this week.  They will play five more next week with Cal Poly and Pacific visiting Municipal Stadium on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. Then SJSU gets back into Mountain West play with three games at Nevada on 2/28-3/2.
