Bats Come Alive In Spartans' 11-1 Win Over SDSU

The Spartans scored in five of the first six innings Sunday afternoon.

AT SAN JOSÉ STATE: In his fourth season with the Spartans…One of the top returning pitchers in the Mountain West entering 2015…A two-time San José State Athlete of the Month recipient and a 2014 second-team All-Mountain West pitcher. 

2014: A second-team All-MW selection…Began the season as the starting DH, but emerged as one of the Mountain West's best starting pitchers down the stretch of the season and into the MW Championship…Second in the conference with a 2.50 ERA in 17 appearances and seven starts…Allowed 70 hits in a team-leading 79.1 innings…Ended the year with four consecutive starts of eight-plus innings during which he was 3-0…Three of those four went nine innings, and he ended the year with his first-career complete game where he struck out 11 while leading the Spartans to an 11-3 win over Air Force in the MW Championship tournament…52 strikeouts to 10 walks on the season...Also notched two saves early in the year while in the reliever role…Earned the win on Opening Day against the eventual MW champion San Diego State Aztecs…Finished the final two months of the season 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA in 46.2 innings over eight appearances and recorded one save. 

2013: Made 19 starts as the third baseman/designated hitter and appeared 20 times out of the Spartan bullpen…Batted .316 for the year and was 3-for-6 in two games at the WAC Championship Tournament…Went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored twice in San José State's regular season finale win that clinched a spot in the WAC Tourney…Tied for the team lead with two saves and finished a staff-high 14 games…Threw a scoreless inning of relief in a Spartan victory at Fresno State (3/5)…Allowed no hits or runs in three straight appearances over 3.2 innings (4/7-12/13)…Picked up a win in a four-inning appearance against Texas State (4/20)…Allowed no runs or hits and struck out two in a winning performance out of the bullpen against CSU Bakersfield (5/17)…Held right-handed hitters to a .184 batting average in 76 at bats. 

2012: Played in 30 games as an outfielder/designated hitter/pinch hitter and made 20 appearances pitching in relief…Posted a 2-2 record with a team-leading 2.36 ERA as a pitcher…Batted .269 with eight runs scored, seven RBIs, a double and a triple…Spartans debut came on Feb. 18 versus San Francisco in a pinch-hit appearance where he drew a walk…First career hit came the next day on Feb. 19 at San Francisco in the Spartans' 7-3 win…Second on the team with three saves and 20 appearances, and fourth with 37 strikeouts…Carried a better-than 4-to-1 strikeouts-to-walks ratio (37 Ks, nine walks)…Went 3-for-5 with a run scored in the Spartans' 11-2 win at Fresno State on April 15…Pitched an inning of hitless, scoreless relief and went 1-for-3 in helping the Spartans defeat No. 7 Stanford, 3-2, on April 17 for the first time in four years…Had a 2-for-5 day at the plate and threw 1.2 innings of shutout relief in the Spartans' 5-3 win at Saint Mary's (Calif.) on Feb. 28…Hit .600 (6-for-10) with a runner on third and less than two outs. 

HIGH SCHOOL: Attended Saint Louis High School in Honolulu…Named the 2011 Hawaii Baseball Gatorade Player of the Year and Interscholastic League of Honolulu Player of the Year…Was a Pacific/West Coast high school All-American…As a senior in 2011, posted a 5-2 record on the mound with one save, 2.06 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 40 2/3 innings pitched while leading the Crusaders to the Division I semifinals…Also batted .438 with three homers, 18 RBIs and an .813 slugging percentage.
